“ It is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible. What we know as blind faith is sustained by innumerable unbeliefs. ”

— Eric Hoffer, The True Believer (1951)

“ I think that if the beast who sleeps in man could be held down by threats of any kind, whether of jail or retribution, then the highest emblem of humanity would be the lion tamer, not the prophet who sacrificed himself. What for centuries raised man above the beast is not the cudgel but the irresistible power of unarmed truth. ”

— Boris Pasternak (1890-1960)

“ Every great scientific truth goes through three stages. First, people say it conflicts with the Bible. Next they say it has been discovered before. Lastly they say they always believed it. ”

Writing the Impossible

eatpoetry:

Where was God, the Yahweh,
as we sat in my car, nervous,
a Christian and Muslim, missing?

Was it goodness we felt,
when my lip pierced your Heaven,
pouring out thick, Islamic lore?

At night, would I go to sleep,
Bible beside lamp — or would
the Angels leaf though Surahs?

And as my dreaming unclasped
would it be streets of gold—
or Houris, and rivers of milk?

Now, I drive to my Church…
Sing. Clap. Praise.

You drive to your Mosque…
Stand. Bow. Pray.

Your hot, July flesh: impossible.
Ergo, I write the impossible:

Halelu’Yah. Subhan’Allah.
Immanuʼel. Masha’Allah.

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

“ I asked her once if she had ever sought the consolations of religion in the concentration camp.

“No,” she said. “I knew God would never come near such a place. So did the Nazis. That was what made them so hilarious and unafraid. That was the strength of the Nazis,” she said. “They understood God better than anyone. They knew how to make Him stay away. ”

“ I do not mean to sketch this blubbering leviathan as a religious hypocrite, nor am I entitled to. He had so opened himself to the consolations of religion that he had become an imbecile. ”

“ We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further. ”
